Day 2 of the CivFund Compliance Training Series shifted the focus from structures to people, asking how organisations manage, protect, and treat those who do the work. Hosted by Lillian Tamale and facilitated by the TASLAF Legal Team under “Employment Law Essentials for Nonprofits,” the session highlighted a hard truth: many compliance crises start as HR issues long before they become financial or legal scandals. Partners unpacked common risks like missing contracts, informal terminations, unclear roles, and “volunteers” functioning as staff without documentation, reminding everyone that employment law looks at reality, not titles. Practical guidance covered HR basics (letters, job descriptions, probation reviews, policies, and clear consultant contracts), while safeguarding was framed as both a legal requirement and a values issue, especially for organisations working with women, girls, and marginalised communities.
